Living with Hypothyroidism
Living with hypothyroidism, caused by an underactive thyroid gland, can mean living with chronic fatigue symptoms, unless daily hormone medication is taken. The thyroid gland controls the bodies metabolism, which means the gland is responsible for how much energy a person has. If the body does not burn carbohydrates and sugars for fuel, a person feels tired and sluggish, in addition to gaining weight.
Taking a daily synthetic hormone replaces the T3 and T4 hormones that the thyroid gland is not producing. Once the right amount of these synthetic hormones is established by trial and error, the hypothyroidism symptoms should disappear. However, the medication may have to be taken forever as it is not a cure, just a replacement for missing hormones.
People living with this condition are typically not diagnosed until the symptoms become severe and debilitating. People talk of being overcome with lethargy, to the point where they do not want to get out of bed all day. Blood tests are the only way to determine if an underactive thyroid is responsible. Many people have never heard of the condition until they are diagnosed with it, even though the symptoms were there for months. This is why it is important to get the word out about the symptoms of an underactive thyroid to both the public and physicians.
