A new study finds that gum disease may increase cancer risk

“People with a history of periodontal disease had a 14 percent higher risk of cancer than those without this disease and the increase persisted among never smokers,” said lead researcher Dominique Michaud, a cancer epidemiologist at Imperial College London in the UK.
People with gum infections have a high amount of inflammatory markers circulating in their blood, and inflammation has been linked to cancer, experts say. But the exact relationship, if any, between gum disease and cancer remains unclear.
This new finding needs to be examined in other populations and among women, but at least suggests that oral health may have some impact on cancer risk, Michaud said.
“If other data can support this relationship, then it will have implications for prevention and may offer new clues about the role of immune function in cancer development,” Michaud said.
In the study, Michaud’s team collected data on more than 48,000 men who participated in the follow-up study of health professionals, which was attended by health professionals 40 to 75 years. Read the rest of this entry »
Treatment of prostate and Green Tea – An Assessment

For too long the benefits of green tea and its components have been subject of scrutiny by investigators in the medical fraternity.
Many studies have indicated that green tea and its components are helpful in providing treatment for various ailments including prostate cancer and benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).
The phytochemicals, chemicals that are biologically active but not nutritive antioxidants in green tea work on growth factors and proteins and act as prostate medicine to restrict the growth of benign and malignant tumors as well.
For men, prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer after skin cancer. Benign enlargement of the prostate gland, in its worst form, causes several problems with urination and libido. Prostate cancer is reigns since it separated from its origin to distant parts of the body. Moreover, there is no guarantee when a benign condition takes a turn for the worst and develop premalignant and ultimately malignancy. Read the rest of this entry »
Bevacizumab, an anti-cancer doubles the risk of gastrointestinal perforation

A note of Europe Press, mentions that a study by Cancer Center at Stony Brook University published in the online edition of the journal Lancet Oncology ‘stresses that the cancer doubles the risk of bowel perforation.
The perforation in the stomach or intestines caused the death of more than 20 percent of cancer patients taking the medicine study and was more common in those suffering from advanced colorectal cancer and renal cancer.
Bevacizumab belongs to a class of medicine called angiogenesis inhibitors that slow the growth of tumors by cutting off its blood supply.
The medicine is beneficial in the treatment of many cancers including colorectal, renal cell cancer non-small cell lung and breast.
The researchers, led by Wu Shenshong, conducted a meta-analysis of 17 trials in which 12,294 involved patients with a variety of solid tumors to evaluate the role of bevacizumab in gastrointestinal perforation. The authors also examined whether the dose or have a specific type of cancer is associated with increased risk of perforation of the stomach or intestines.
The findings showed that the incidence of gastrointestinal perforation was 0.9 percent with a risk two times greater in patients receiving the medicine compared with controls, and a mortality of 21.7 percent in those who developed the perforation. The probability of occurrence of the disorder depended on the dose. Thus, smaller amounts of bavacizumab increased the risk of gastrointestinal perforation in 61 per cent (2.5 mg / kg per week) and increased by 167 percent (5 mg / kg per week).
