Another strong indicator is Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, since mutations in the BRCA genes are more frequent in that population. Risk assessment is best performed by a genetic professional such as a Genetic Counselor, who can determine who is appropriate for genetic testing and which test is indicated. For those of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, Sharsheret is an organization for Jewish women and families facing breast cancer. The have a wonderful peer support program, a Genetics for Life program and many other free, confidential and helpful resources.
